MHRA style is a set of guidelines for referencing, commonly used in humanities subjects. In MHRA, sources are cited in footnotes, marked by superscript numbers in the text. Subsequent citations of the same source are shortened, usually to just the author’s last name and the page number.

The MHRA style is used in the Humanities, and particularly these disciplines: English, modern languages and literature. With MHRA, you insert any references that you wish to make within the text of your document (for example, where you have quoted from another text, or referred to another author‟s work), as a footnote.

A well-written university assignment draws on ideas and research by other writers. MHRA referencing of sources demonstrates that you read work by major writers in your specialty. It also enables students to: Acknowledge the writers of the word and ideas they borrowed for their papers.

The MHRA guide recommends using the format: Author, ‘Title of Essay’, in Title of Book, ed. by Editor’s Name (publication details), pp. x-y. Some people prefer to use a slightly different format such as: Author, ‘Title of Essay’, in Editor’s Name ed., Title of Book(publication details), pp. x-y.
